A very common issue people find is that their Heat Pump is iced up or freezes over. Since there is normal “frost” vs abnormal “icing”, it is important to see which issue applies.

Normal Frost vs Icing Up

It is quite normal for Heat pumps naturally to develop a thin layer of frost in cold weather.

If the system goes into defrost mode periodically and the frost melts on its own, everything is working properly. Defrost cycles generally last five to fifteen minutes or so at intervals of one to two hours per day.

However, If the entire outdoor unit is encased in ice, or the ice doesn’t melt after a defrost cycle, there is something else going on.

Turn the System Off, Fan on During Freezes

If the outdoor unit is heavily iced over you will need to contact a professional. First, it will be necessary switch the system from heat or cool to “fan Only” at the thermostat.

Running it while frozen can damage the compressor and a technician will not be able to run diagnostics on a frozen system.

Clear Area Around the Outdoor Unit

Ice buildup can start with restricted airflow. Check your outdoor unit for:

• Snow piled against the unit
• Leaves, debris, or vegetation
• Blocked or clogged coils

Ensure the unit has a minimum of two to three feet of breathing room on all sides.

Check Air Filters

A clogged filter reduces airflow and can cause the outdoor coil to freeze. Replace air filters if

• They look dirty or have noticeable debris or discoloration
• It’s been more than one to three months
• Airflow feels weak

Do Not Chip Ice if Heat Pump Freezes

If you use tools to break ice can puncture the coil or damage the coil’s fins. This can lead to very expensive repairs or replacements.

If you need to help it thaw:

• Turn the system to Emergency Heat (if available) or Fan Only setting on the thermostat
• Let the outdoor unit sit off while the ice melts naturally

Condensate Drainage

If you have blockages or poor drainage, it can cause water to refreeze around the base of the unit.

The things to look for:

• Ice forming at the base of the unit
• Blocked drain holes
• Water pooling under the unit

Defrost Cycle Issues

If your heat pump isn’t defrosting on its own, the issue could be:

• A faulty defrost sensor
• A stuck reversing valve
• A malfunctioning control board
• Low refrigerant (requires a licensed tech)
