Harpers Ferry, WV

Beautiful and scenic Harpers Ferry is located in Jefferson County, WV. It is nestled between two rivers, the Potomac River and Shenandoah River where they converge. A very vital West Virginia junction point adjoining Maryland and Virginia.

Harpers Ferry History

It was this important and vital junction that first leant itself to offer a ferry service to traverse the rivers. The first ferry was established there in 1733. In 1751 Robert Harper purchased 126 acres from Lord Fairfax and established a commercial ferry there. This became an important North to South route and an essential connection between Washington DC and the Ohio valley.

The United States Armory was established in Harpers Ferry in 1799. The town became industrialized during that period and produced a significant amount of small arms for the government. It continued to make arms for the government until it was destroyed in 1861 to prevent it’s capture during the Civil War.

Due to it’s important strategic location Harpers Ferry was integral during the Civil War. It changed hands eight times during the war. Being a supply line, it is no surprise that Harpers Ferry had such a large role in the Civil war. In October 1859 Harpers Ferry was the site of John Brown’s raid on the arsenal.

The ferry ceased operation in 1824 when the railroad began operating. The railroad bridge was the only bridge across the Potomac River at the time. It became a major railway intersection joining the B&O rail system with the Winchester and Potomac Railroad.

Early Native American History, Tuscaroran people to the armory and Civil War, Harpers Ferry has a rich, colorful history.
