NATE Certification for HVAC Technicians

The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is the largest, non profit organization which tests and certifies HVAC technicians. This ensures technicians have the knowledge and skills required in this industry.

This certification offers HVAC consumers confidence in knowing these certified technicians are properly trained and proficient with the equipment they service:

  • Air Conditioning.
  • Ventilation.
  • Heat Pumps.
  • Heating (Gas and Oil).

Testing Levels

There are four testing levels that NATE certifies. Levels:

  • 1- Ready to Work Certificate, Focuses on fundamental job knowledge and skills certification.
  • 2- HVAC Support Technician, covers fundamental level topics linked to higher skilled levels.
  • 3- Core and Specialty Certificate, for technicians with two or more years in the field. This testing covers a broad range of installation and service knowledge.
  • 4- Senior Level Efficiency Analyst Certification- Senior level certification requires at least two prior testing levels on both heating and air conditioning.

Recertification

Technicians must recertify every two years to ensure they are up to date on evolving technology. NATE recertification requires sixteen hours of ongoing continuing education hours or retesting in order to comply.
