HVAC Warranties vary greatly and it is very important to consider what is offered before you make your purchase. The warranty is what you will rely on if there are any issues with any of your HVAC equipment. Warranties are not all the same. Warranties prove the manufacturer’s commitment to their product and demonstrate their ability to stand behind their product(s). Sometimes warranty coverage is third party. The standard manufacturer’s warranty is normally five years on parts and thirty days to one year on labor unless otherwise specified. An extended warranty will extend that coverage to ten years on parts with labor from one year to ten years.

What is normally covered under most Manufacturer Parts Warranties

Most HVAC warranties will cover all serialized parts against defect or failure under normal conditions. Many warranties cover all parts by that manufacturer installed for the duration of the warranty period.

What is Not Covered under your Manufacturer’s Parts Warranties

Things that are generally not covered under most warranties:

1. Consumable parts are generally not covered after the first year. These would include filters, capacitors, etc.
2. Physical damage, Power surges to the equipment, damage as a result of storms, fire, fallen trees, etc. These issues are normally covered under a homeowner’s insurance policy.
3. Tampering- Any repairs, service or work attempted by a non certified technician will void the warranty. ALWAYS employ only certified, licensed technicians to perform any work on your HVAC system(s).

HVAC Labor Warranties

Labor warranties vary a great deal, even with an extended warranty. Some labor warranties cover only allowable labor. Yet some will also cover refrigerant. This can be significant if your system takes 8-15 pounds of refrigerant at a cost of $80-120 per pound. When the refrigerant is covered, there is no cost to replace a warrantied parts even the repair requires refrigerant. A comprehensive extended warranty plan will cover any warranty costs with no out-of-pocket costs to the consumer. Always check your plan to verify all coverage.

Be Aware and Compare

A comprehensive extended labor warranty plan is worth your consideration. Your HVAC system is one of the most expensive and hard working equipment in your home and having any down time is hard to deal with.

Be aware and compare the differences before you buy:

1. Equipment Coverage: Ten year parts warranty- should include all parts by the manufacturer. Add on equipment such as humidifiers, thermostats, air purification systems will have their own warranties and are not included in the overall manufacturer’s warranty.
2. Extended Labor warranty: A good comprehensive plan will cover labor and refrigerant without any out-of-pocket expenses for the duration of the warranty.
